Movie Review
“Saunkan Saunkne” is a delightful Punjabi romantic comedy that guarantees laughter and entertainment from start to finish. Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron and written by Amberdeep Singh, the film takes us back to the 70s-80s era, delivering a sweet and hilarious story.
The movie revolves around Nirmal (played by Ammy Virk) and Nasibo (played by Sargun Mehta), a happily married couple who long for a child. Despite trying various remedies and spells, they are unable to conceive even after eight years of marriage. Nasibo’s mother-in-law (Nirmal Rishi) suggests the idea of Nirmal getting married again, and Nasibo, convinced by her mother-in-law, sets out to find the perfect girl for her husband. This leads her to her younger sister Kirna (Nimrat Khaira), whom she believes will be easier to manage as a co-wife (saunkan).
However, the real drama begins after Nirmal and Kirna get married. Sharing a husband proves to be much more challenging for Nasibo than she initially thought. Kirna effortlessly wins the hearts of both Nirmal and their mother-in-law, completely changing the dynamics of the household. Nasibo feels left out and a battle ensues between the two wives, resulting in hilarious and chaotic situations.
Amberdeep Singh’s writing brings out the best in this comedy, with situational humor that keeps the audience engaged throughout. The director, Amarjit Singh Saron, showcases his talent once again after his previous successful film, ‘Honsla Rakh.’ His execution of the scenes is commendable, leaving a lasting impact on the viewers.
The performances in the film are outstanding. Ammy Virk shines in his role, displaying versatility and finesse in portraying the loving husband caught in the crossfire between his two wives. Sargun Mehta impresses with her comic timing, stepping out of her usual emotional roles and delivering a delightful performance as Nasibo. Nimrat Khaira, known for her singing prowess, surprises everyone with her acting skills, perfectly capturing the essence of the feisty and outspoken Kirna.
Veteran actress Nirmal Rishi steals the show with her captivating presence and powerful performance. Her portrayal of the mother-in-law adds depth and authenticity to the film. The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, making the on-screen interactions highly entertaining.
While the film is a laughter riot, one minor drawback is its length. The second half of the movie feels a bit stretched, a common issue in Punjabi cinema. However, this doesn’t overshadow the overall entertainment and enjoyment offered by the film.
In summary, “Saunkan Saunkne” is a must-watch comedy that guarantees laughs and a great time. With its witty writing, strong performances, and perfect blend of humor and family entertainment, it stands out as an engaging and memorable film.
