Diljit Dosanjh’s highly anticipated film “Ghallu Ghara,” directed by Honey Trehan, finds itself embroiled in controversy as it faces resistance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which draws inspiration from the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh human rights activist of the 1990s, has been subjected to extensive cuts and has been granted an ‘A’ certificate.

According to reports, the CBFC has recommended 21 cuts in the film, citing certain sections and dialogues as inflammatory and communal. The board expresses concerns that these elements may incite violence and radicalize Sikh youth. Furthermore, it asserts that the film has the potential to impact the country’s sovereignty and strain relations with neighboring states. Consequently, the CBFC has also instructed the removal of specific dialogues and the film’s title.

In response, RSVP Films, the production company headed by Ronnie Screwvala, has filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court under Section 5C of the Cinematograph Act. The appeal challenges the CBFC’s demand for cuts, asserting that it infringes upon the freedom of speech and expression as guaranteed by Article 19 (1)(a) of the Constitution of India. The next hearing is scheduled for July 14, 2023.

The producer of “Ghallu Ghara” emphasizes that removing 64 minutes from the film would significantly impact its essence and narrative integrity. The government has also raised objections to the film’s title, further complicating the matter.

Director Honey Trehan defends the film, stating that it presents real events without any bias or fictional elements. The intention behind “Ghallu Ghara” is to bring to the screen a true account of historical events, shedding light on the realities of that time.

In addition to Diljit Dosanjh, the film stars Arjun Rampal in prominent roles, further raising anticipation among fans and film enthusiasts.

The controversy surrounding “Ghallu Ghara” underscores the ongoing debate surrounding creative freedom and censorship in the Indian film industry. As the legal battle unfolds, the outcome of the court’s decision will have significant implications for the film and its portrayal of sensitive historical events. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving situation.
